Dua Lipa Sues Samsung Over Alleged Unauthorised TV Packaging Use

BPI Report Shows Rock Reaching Near Decade-High Share of UK Singles Market

Dua Lipa has filed a $15 million lawsuit against Samsung, accusing the tech giant of using her image on television packaging without authorisation.

The complaint, filed in a California federal court, alleges that Samsung used a photograph of the artist taken during her 2024 performance at Austin City Limits Festival across multiple TV product boxes sold in the United States. According to the filing, the image appeared prominently on packaging and marketing materials despite no licensing agreement being in place.

Lipa’s legal team argues that the company knowingly benefited from her commercial profile and public image in order to help market its products, pointing to social media posts from consumers who began referring to the packaging as the “Dua Lipa TV Box”. The lawsuit claims that fan reactions online demonstrated the commercial value attached to her likeness, with some users suggesting they were motivated to purchase the televisions specifically because of her appearance on the box.

The case includes allegations of copyright infringement, trademark infringement, and unauthorised commercial use of her image. Court documents state that Lipa owns the rights to the photograph used on the packaging and that Samsung continued using the image after receiving multiple cease-and-desist requests.

The dispute also highlights the broader commercial value of artist branding within consumer electronics and advertising, particularly for globally recognisable artists with major endorsement portfolios. Over recent years, Lipa has partnered with brands including Puma, Versace, Chanel, Porsche, and Nespresso, making image licensing and brand control a significant part of her commercial business.

The lawsuit arrives as artist likeness rights continue to attract greater scrutiny across entertainment, advertising, and technology sectors, particularly as companies increasingly rely on recognisable personalities to drive product visibility and consumer engagement.
